What a month it has been. We've discovered the easy part of farming is spending money 🤪😅 It seems like every day we're thinking of another thing we need to buy or getting another thing in the mail that we bought. I know everyone says that start up costs are high and the next year is easier so we're really looking forward to that ! It takes money to make money right 💸 and we are so grateful to everyone who has helped us on our way, we'd be lost without you.
We got three tarps and laid them out to block out weeds and kill the grass. We are really hoping they'll be ready in the spring when we need them, but there's a chance the grass won't be dead and we'll need to till. Hoping we won't have to because we really want to be no till for the health of the soil, but a lot of no till farms start off by tilling and then just don't do it again. We'll just have to see when it's time, another great lesson from farming - p a t i e n c e
We got 20 cubic yards of compost delivered. The company uses manure from the zoo which I find very interesting, never thought elephant poo would make it into our garden but what a cool thing
Lots of random chores around, there's always something to do ! We went down to part time at our other jobs just to keep some money coming in and knowing that we needed to devote more time to getting our farm off the ground.
We've survived wind storms of relatively epic proportions 🌬
We've been accepted into our first market and have applied to a few others as well. We'll definitely be vending at the Dayton 2nd Street market (not sure if we'll be on Saturday or Sunday yet) and we're so excited about it, we love that market and love going to Dayton.
And the best for last, we planted our first rounds of seeds !
Hard to believe that is $700 in seeds right ? It was for us 😅 We're so excited to grow all the things ! A small list of what we've planted so far that is bound to be missing a few things: onions, leeks, shallots, celery, celeriac, parsley, thyme, sage, oregano, marjoram, echinacea, kale, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, mustard greens, tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers, eggplant, dahlia, lupine, 4oclocks, asparagus, sunball, scabiosa, aster, celosia, mint, lemon balm, foxglove, cottage pinks, Canterbury bells... that's it for now and hopefully this week we'll start our first round of quicks.
It's been so exciting to watch the seedlings sprout. I don't think that will ever not be magical to us.
Our grow lights have put some pressure on our solar set up. We're managing it with a generator thankfully but what we'd really love in the future is a plant nursery with heated tables. One day hopefully !
